Operation Nyamba

Protecting sea turtles on the French island of Mayotte

Operation Nyamba
Fighting turtle poaching on the beaches of Mayotte

Under the direction of Sea Shepherd France, Operation Nyamba is a land-based campaign to protect green sea turtles coming on shore to lay their eggs in Mayotte. This French island in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and Mozambique is home to a 68,381km² protected marine reserve, rich in ocean wildlife. Yet the sea turtles are often killed by poachers who sell the meat on the black market. Since the first campaign in June 2017, Sea Shepherd volunteers have returned each year to patrol the beaches throughout the night to protect them through until the end of the laying season.
